Burning Man 2016

My Burning Man 2016, 2018 and 2022 art installation (nicknamed the "Triangle" by some friends) was a revision of a project that began in 2004 and hadn't been to the Playa since 2007 (when it was dead on arrival). The piezo transducers from previous versions were replaced with vibration sensors and the Alesis drum trigger module and Emu synth were replaced with a Wav Trigger audio player. This allowed me to run the audio source from a 12v battery pack containing 8 AA batteries, eliminating the need for a car battery and power inverter and making the whole project easier to maintain and more reliable. The wind chime itself and the boom box amplifier where the same as the original version.

Each of the six chimes were assigned to a unique instrument sound and the Wav Trigger was programmed to randomly select a note from a B-flat minor triad spread over two octaves.

The wind chime is suspended from the apex of a pyramid constructed of clear acrylic rods mounted on a 6ft square, 18in high platform with the electronics hidden inside. The rods are wrapped in two spirals of EL wire triggered by two sound activated drivers placed next to each of the stereo speakers.

I wasn't able to get an audio recording at Burning Man but I dubbed a studio recording using the same sound set into a video clip which gives a pretty good idea of what it was like at the event.
